As Team E.A.R recover from yet another epic Bank Holiday & Ibiza Opening Weekend, we only saw fit to continue our “Records Store We Dig” series with Hard Wax – a historical vinyl emporium situated at the heart of Berlin’s techno-land, the Kreuzberg district.
Mark Ernestus opened it’s doors in 1989 just before the wall fell. In the face of adversity and ever dwindling numbers of independent record stores, Hard Wax recently celebrated it’s 20th anniversary and in so doing stands testament to the power of what can be achieved through the love of great music.
The appearance of the store itself is true to the industrial techno scene that epitomises Berlin. Situated on the 3rd floor, you enter via a stairwell covered in graffiti and after climbing up whilst asking yourself “is this REALLY the right way?” you then enter wax heaven with row upon row of vinyl spanning genres from minimal techno to dirty disco.
But here at E.A.R HQ, even though the aesthetic quality & diversity of stock in a store is of huge importance, the number one defining element of a great place to buy your tunes is the knowledge & friendliness of the staff.
At Hard Wax, you will not be disappointed. Locked away in this music lover’s cave, the people who work here spend hour upon hour listening, advising and compiling top tens.
Hard Wax now has legendary status for us and vinyl junkies worldwide. So if you’re passing through Berlin, make sure you visit this “bunker-chic” haven. In the meantime, check out their excellent website and their choices for this week.
